Mara Appliance Tips

  1. Remember there is an adjustment period, so even though it feels awkward now, you will be used to the appliance and feeling better in a few days
  2. If you experience difficulty with eating, cut your food into small pieces until you're comfortable. You may experience this for 4-10 days.
  3. You may also experience an increase in the amount of saliva in your mouth. This will decrease within a few days.
  4. Remember to bite forward with your lower jaw until your muscles become accustomed to the new position. You may feel like you're biting your cheeks at first. It can take about a week until you feel completely comfortable.
  5. Your cheeks will be puffy, but that should decrease over the next several weeks.
  6. Orabase with benzocaine, this will relieve soreness of your cheeks and gums. This is available at your local drugstore.
  7. If you should lose any part of the MARA appliance, please save it and bring it to your next appointment.
  8. If anything feels loose or broken, call our office immediately to have it evaluated.
