Do Braces Hurt? What to Expect

Starting braces is a big step — and it’s completely normal to have questions about what the first few days will feel like. At Sacks Orthodontics, we want to make sure you know what to expect and feel confident every step of the way.

In this short video, Dr. Eric Sacks shares a few helpful tips on how to manage minor discomfort after getting your braces on.

Are Braces Still Painful?

There’s a common belief that braces are just as uncomfortable as they were 20 years ago. The good news? That’s simply not true.

Thanks to modern technology, today’s braces are designed to be more comfortable and gentle than ever before. Most patients experience only mild soreness for a day or two — usually right after their braces are first placed or adjusted.

How to Ease Braces Discomfort

If your teeth feel tender in the first 24–72 hours, here’s what Dr. Sacks recommends:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relief like Tylenol or Advil, following the dosage instructions on the label
  • Eat soft foods like smoothies, yogurt, or mashed potatoes
  • Avoid sticky or crunchy snacks while your mouth adjusts
  • Use orthodontic wax if any brackets or wires are rubbing against your cheeks

Discomfort is usually brief and completely manageable — and our team is here if you need support or have questions.
