If your child has a palatal expander as part of their orthodontic treatment, you may be wondering how to turn it correctly. Don’t worry — it’s simpler than it sounds, and we’re here to walk you through it.
In this short video, Etan from Sacks Orthodontics explains exactly how to turn your expander safely and effectively at home.
If you're more of a reader, here’s a breakdown of what our team covers in the video:
The expander has a small arrow that shows you the direction to turn. This arrow is your guide — always follow it!
You’ll receive a special key from us. Insert it all the way into the notch on the expander until it feels secure.
Gently turn the key in the direction of the arrow. When you're done, you should see a new hole appear in the original spot — that means the turn was successful.
It might feel strange at first to have something pressing against the roof of the mouth. That’s normal! Most patients adjust within a few days.
We’re always happy to help. Whether you have a question, a concern, or just want a little reassurance, stop by our Livingston, NJ office.
