How to Put Rubber Bands on Braces (the Right Way)

If you're wearing braces, chances are your orthodontist has recommended rubber bands (also known as elastics) to help correct your bite. Rubber bands are a small but mighty part of your orthodontic treatment, and knowing how to wear them properly can make a big difference in how quickly and effectively your smile improves.

At Sacks Orthodontics in Livingston, NJ, we make sure our patients feel confident every step of the way. Dr. Sacks put together this quick video to show you exactly how to place your rubber bands the right way.

Step-by-Step Instructions

If you're more of a reader, here’s a breakdown of what our team covers in the video:

1. Start at the Canine (Your Pointy Tooth)
Look for the canine tooth on your top or bottom arch — it’s the one that looks a little sharper than the rest. That’s your starting point.

2. Stretch the Rubber Band Back to Your First Molar
From your canine, gently pull the rubber band back to your first molar (that’s the bigger tooth toward the back of your mouth). Hook it around the bracket.

3. Don’t Worry About Stretching It Too Far
It’s normal to feel a little tension — that means it’s working. The rubber bands are designed to stretch and won’t snap easily.

4. Some Discomfort Is Normal
You might feel a bit sore when you first start wearing your rubber bands. That’s totally normal and should go away as your mouth adjusts.

5. Wear Them All the Time (Yes, Really!)
Rubber bands only work if you wear them consistently. That means all day, every day — unless your orthodontist tells you otherwise. The more consistently you wear them, the faster your treatment will progress.
