Dealing with a poking braces wire? We know it can be uncomfortable, especially if you're stuck at home and can’t get to the orthodontist right away. The good news is, there are a couple of safe, simple things you can do to get relief.
In this quick video, our team at Sacks Orthodontics walks you through how to manage a poky wire at home — and when to call us for help.
If you're more of a reader, here’s a breakdown of what our team covers in the video:
The easiest solution is to use orthodontic wax. Just roll a small piece between your fingers and press it over the part of the wire that’s bothering you. Think of it like Play-Doh — soft, moldable, and quick to apply. Wax offers temporary relief and can be a great first step.
If the wax doesn’t help, you can clip the wire at home. Make sure to use a clean, unused nail clipper. Find the part of the wire that’s poking and clip it as close as possible.
– If it’s too difficult to reach from the back, try clipping from the front and gently pulling the wire out.
Seriously — don’t stress! We would much rather you feel comfortable than suffer through a poky wire. If you clip it yourself, we’ll just take a look at your next visit to make sure everything’s still on track.
If you’re unsure about clipping the wire yourself or the discomfort continues, give us a call. Our amazing front desk team will get you scheduled with one of our assistants as soon as possible.
At Sacks Orthodontics in Livingston, NJ, your comfort is just as important as your smile. Whether it’s a poky wire or a question about your treatment, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here for you — always.
